I was wanting to ask a question about ASD. One of my friends has identical male twins with only one of them being diagnosed on the Autistic spectrum. Her 2 year old daughter has also been recently diagnosed to be on the autistic spectrum. There is no history of autism on either the maternal or paternal side of the family. Firstly, how is it possible that genetics would be responsible if in the set of identical twins only one child has autism? Is it possible that germline mutations occurred due to environmental factors?

My son is going to have twins. I'm a fraternal twin and I have another brother and sister that are fraternal twins. My husband has on his side of the family twins (fraternal) and triplets - boys. Is our son having twins because of our background? Does it have to do with our genetics?

My daughters were determined to be monochorionic by pathology report of the placenta after birth which means they are definitely identical twins. They present fairly different now in many subtle ways, figure balance, nose shape and abilities to roll their tongues, double jointed and the like. One appears to take after my side of the family, the other my husbands'. What can you tell me about near-identical twinning or the Lyonization theory?

I have a couple of questions. First what are semi-identical twins? How are they different from identical or fraternal twins? Do they look more fraternal or identical or are they somewhere in between? Second, how can Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen look so similar but be fraternal twins? Could they perhaps be semi-identical twins?

Mi padre es un gemelo idéntico y el abuelo de mi esposo es gemelo fraterno. ¿Esto puede aumentar nuestra probabilidad de concebir gemelos, o es esto un rasgo genético que solo viene de la mamá y solo se refiere a gemelos fraternos? (Siempre hemos querido gemelos- un niño y una niña).
